A Work in Progress…
A few months ago, I was contacted by a cousin who had inherited a photo album with a variety of wonderful portraits from the Ehle family. (The Ehle’s are on my husband’s father’s side) This album contains photos from the Civil War era up until about the 1910s with many members of the extended Ehle, Fancher, Sharp, Stevens, Rogers, and other families included. Unfortunately, most of the photos have not been labeled.

The album was believed to have been started by CS Ehle and his wife Harriet Elizabeth Sharp Ehle. It was passed to their son George Burton Ehle and his wife Mary Belle Johnson, and then on to their daughter, Margaret, and finally onto Bill’s sister. The album was purchased at a furniture store in Minneapolis that opened in 1891.
Bill and I decided we would collaborate on trying to put names to these faces and, to our mutual surprise, we have had some moderate success! By comparing notes, sharing our family photos, a lot of online research, and educated guess work, we were able to firmly ID about 25% of the photos and tentatively ID many more.
Bill has kindly allowed me to publish the photos so that they are not lost to history. I will start with the photos that are firmly identified, move to the tentatively identified, and finally post the unknown portraits. If anyone has additional information on any of these people, PLEASE contact me via email, or leave a comment.
Our branch of the Ehle family begins in New York. Our Ehles then migrated to Michigan, Wisconsin, and Minnesota. The foundational members of the family branch in the photo album were Charles P Ehle and his wife Sarah “Sally” Ann Fancher. The photos of their known children follow.

Bill and I are continuing to make progress on identifying the 3 remaining siblings of Charles Smith Ehle. We have some tentative identifications of sisters Helen Ehle Marvin and Anna Eliza Ehle. Another brother, Sherman A Ehle remains unidentified. I am hopeful that a descendant of their families will publish a photo for comparison one day.
Other photos from the Ehle Album can be seen here: 2, 3, 4, 5, 6
