Sebastian J. Witzel

Sebastian Witzel is my husband’s 2nd great grandfather. He is buried at Lincoln Memorial Cemetery in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. You can view his memorial here.
Sebastian was born in Oberfalz,Amorbach,Germany on 31 January 1859. To date, his parents are unknown, but Sebastian left Germany via Antwerp, Belgium in August 1888 with his future wife, Marie Repp. The couple arrived in New York on 5 September 1888 and made their way to Milwaukee. The couple had their first son, Fredrick John on 25 December 1888. Another son, Edward Arthur, followed in 1892.

Sebastian worked and lived in Milwaukee, Wisconsin from his arrival in the US until his death. He worked for many years as a Brewer then took various jobs including cement work and glass blowing before being placed in the Layton Home for Incurables where he spent his last years.
Sebastian died 17 March 1942. His obituary omits any mention of his oldest son Fred who had died in 1938. There was a falling out in the family between the daughter of Edward and the daughter-in-law of Fred that divided the family in the mid 1930s. It would appear that Edward’s family were the ones who submitted the obituary to the newspaper. Sebastian is buried with his wife Marie who died in 1939.
